The Senate of Argentina rejected on Thursday (20), for only one vote, the creation of a special committee to investigate the president Javier Milei and his sister, Karina Milei, secretary general of the presidency, in the scandal involving the cryptocurrency Libra. Voting occurred amid strong accusations of fraud and corruption against the government.
The proposal needed 48 votes to be approved, but it obtained 47. The result was guaranteed with the opposite vote of the BLOCTOR of Pro, party of former President Mauricio Macri, and six Radical Civic Union parliamentarians (UCR).
The party has five governors aligned with the Milei government due to the financial dependence of federal support provinces. UCR President Martín Lousteau and other party parliamentarians voted in favor of the investigation.
Lousteau directly criticized Milei, stating that “without the participation of the president, the fraud would not have been possible.”
In addition to the rejection of the committee, the senators also barred the request to challenge the chief of staff, Guillermo Franco, responsible for the government’s political articulations. Peronism, the largest bench in the house, voted in favor of the investigation.
