The G7 is struggling to reach an agreement on a statement draft to mark three years since the Ukraine invasion of Russia, after an initial draft was significantly softened, according to diplomats familiar with the negotiations.
Divisions highlight the deterioration of relationships between allies as President Donald Trump seeks unilateral peace negotiations with Russia – and without Europe or Ukraine – with the aim of ending the conflict.
The most recent draft seen by Bloombergdated February 19, states that “strong security guarantees and UK’s integration into the EU will be critical to ensure lasting peace that prevents future aggressions.”
This is a softer language than the initial version, which asked for a peace “that did not reward the aggression or authorize future wars” through “a durable security guarantee for Ukraine, with troops and resources on the ground, accompanied by a ROBUST INTERNATIONAL SUPERVISION To monitor the agreed lines. ” A reference to Atlantic Integration was also removed.

Negotiators eliminated a reference to allies by instructing their finance ministers to restrict or adapt the Russian oil price ceiling in an attempt to encourage Moscow to negotiate, which was in the initial version.

The allies will continue to negotiate the text and more changes are likely, the diplomats said, who asked for anonymity to discuss sensitive issues.
