Vatican: Papa Francisco had two episodes of acute respiratory failure

Pope Francis suffered two episodes of acute respiratory failure on Monday (3), the Vatican said.

According to the new statement, the pontiff also needed noninvasive mechanical ventilation during the day. The state of health of Francisco, who is 88 years old, remains “reserved”.

“Today, the Holy Father presented two episodes of acute respiratory failure, caused by significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm,” the message says. “Two bronchoscopies were then held with the need for aspiration of abundant secretions.”

The Vatican added that the Pope remained “vigilant, oriented and collaborative.”
