Material discloses scientific knowledge about propolis in accessible language, focusing on the safe consumption of the product
Scientists at (University of Franca) and (University of São Paulo) developed the “” (PDF – 14 MB). The goal is to spread scientific knowledge about the substance produced by bees in language accessible to a large audience.
Propolis is a substance collected by bees from trees and plants, used to protect the hive from infections. In the market, it is valued for its medicinal properties, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action. It is important in the cosmetics industry, eating and pharmaceutical supplements.
Unifran’s teacher and one of the authors of the publication Raquel Alves dos Santos states that, although propolis is a natural substance, it is not always suitable for consumption, and it is necessary to be appropriate to the requirements of the regulatory agencies.
“The Guide seeks to bring to the population important information about this versatile product of Brazilian biodiversity, especially the requirements for their consumption to be safe. There is a common thinking among the lay population that, only because it is a natural product, propolis is good for health. This is a mistake, since even when it comes to a natural product, it is important to follow the guidelines established by regulatory agencies ”declares.
The data of the material are the result of works funded by the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation and coordinated by teachers Jairo Kenupp Bastos, Ribeirão Preto’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Sérgio Ricardo Ambrósio, from Unifran.
“The project has generated numerous products, such as scientific articles, patents, book chapters and the formation of dozens of students, including scientific, masters and doctorate initiation. Without the support of FAPESP the multidimensional approach performed with the different types of propolis in Brazil would not have been possible ”Saints affirms.
In addition to the teachers from Unifran and USP, the guide was attended by Flávio Henrique Marçal Vieira, a master’s student, with illustrations by Nicoly Rilary Salinas, student of Vieira in high school.
