Trouble for collectors: DVDs can break down by themselves

Until the end, manufacturers such as Sony promised an astonishing durability of DVDs: If you care, the data carriers should remain readable for up to 100 years. But as is often the case with advertising promises, reality looks a little different. Film and series lovers who rely on physical media in order to become independent of the mood of digital platforms are now facing an unexpected problem: some DVDs are already crumbling by themselves.
