Algarve citruses will be featured at BTL 2025 – Lisbon Tourism Scholarship, with the action “Citrinos do Algarve – IGP, an asset for the region’s tourism promotion”, promoted by CCDR Algarve | Agriculture and Fisheries, in partnership with Algarorange – Algarve Citrine Operators Association and the Algarve Tourism Region. The event takes place on March 12, at 14:00, at the Algarve stand, at the country’s main tourism fair.
The session will be attended by the President and Vice-President of the Algarve, José Apolinário and Pedro Valadas Monteiro Coordination and Regional Development Commission (CCDR), respectively. The event includes the presentation of a study on the perception and consumption of Algarve orange, developed by students at the University of Algarve, with the objective of deepening knowledge about this product and reinforcing its market positioning strategy.
There will be an innovative cocktail tasting session, made with Algarve orange and other local agri-food products. This gastronomic experience will be promoted by the Vila Real António Hotel and Tourism School, in collaboration with.
Algarorange, created in 2018, is a non -profit business association that represents and defends the algarve citrus, bringing together 12 members responsible for about 40% of citrus production in the region and 30% of national production. The Algarve is the main citrus producing zone in Portugal, being responsible for 87% of orange production in the country. The 2023-2024 campaign has exceeded 10% the average of the last 10 years, thanks to investment in technology, innovation and resource use efficiency.
The production of citrus in the Algarve generates an annual turnover of 180 million euros. In 2023, according to the National Institute of Statistics, regional fruit exports exceeded 107.5 million euros, representing 37% of Algarve’s exports. Algarve orange occupies third place among the most exported fruits by Portugal, with 90% of international sales for the European market, with Spain, France and Poland the main importing countries.
They stand out for the thin, colorful and bright, as well as their high juice, sweet and unmistakable flavor. The seal regulated by the European Union ensures the authenticity and origin of this product, which has been one of the major engines of the agri -food Algarve in the last decade. About 60% of regional citrus exports and 40% of sales for large distribution are made under this seal. In the 2023/24 campaign, the marketing of Algarve IGP citruss reached a record of over 64,000 tons, a growth of 360% compared to the 2016/17 campaign.
The sector has been modernizing investments in production technologies, namely efficient watering and fruit processing and packaging, using the support of European funds.
The action “Citrinos do Algarve-IGP, an asset for the region’s tourism promotion” is part of the PDR2020-20.2-Feader-092942 (RRN 2023 Technical Assistance), reinforcing the link between agricultural production and the region’s tourism promotion.
