Ukraine has accepted a proposal from the United States for a 30-day temporary ceasefire and awaits Russia’s response. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that his country has shown to be willing to a respite and now it is up to Kremlin to decide. The proposal was discussed at a meeting between representatives from Ukraine and the United States in Jidá, Saudi Arabia. The Ukrainian government said that if the ceasefire is realized, it will seek security guarantees with its European allies. Zelensky pointed out that the time of truce should serve to formalize established commitments and safety conditions.

Kremlin, in turn, said he expected more details about the deal through diplomatic channels in the coming days. Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow awaits information from US negotiators. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and leaders from other Western countries have also asked the Russian government to respond to the ceasefire proposal.

In the United States, the acceptance of the truce by Ukraine led President Donald Trump to remove the suspension of military aid from the country. Military equipment remittances and intelligence sharing, frozen from a meeting between Trump and Zelensky in February, will resume. Poland has confirmed that the sending of American weapons through the Jasionka Logistics Center has returned to previous levels. Trump also indicated that he intends to meet Zelensky again at the White House and that he can talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days. The US leader said he expects a complete ceasefire soon and mentioned a “big meeting” with Russia.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which has lasted more than three years, had a recent increase in violence. Since the US interrupted its assistance, Russia has intensified attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure and has advanced in regions near the border. At the same time, Ukraine performed one of the biggest drone attacks against Russian territory, resulting in three deaths.

The change in US politics in relation to war has led European countries to review their strategy. French President Emmanuel Macron defended “solid” security guarantees to Ukraine, while British Prime Minister Keir Stmerer and Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni stressed that the decision is now in the hands of Russia.
