5.5 magnitude earthquake is recorded in Mexico

Government issued alert and activated protection protocols; Epicenter was 500 km from the capital

Mexico registered a 5.5 magnitude earthquake on Saturday (15.mar.2025). According to, the tremor took place around midnight (Brasília time) and the epicenter was in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, about 500 km south of. The seismic shock could also be felt in the capital and the government issued an earthquake alert.

The earthquake was more noticeable in the highest areas of the city. The director-general of the subway public transport system, said that there were no incidents in the facilities and the service is operating normally after the inspection protocols in workshops, offices and the subway network itself.

Authorities at Mexico City International Airport reported that there was also no damage to the facilities of the terminal. Helicopters of Mexico City Security Secretariat are still flying over the capital to verify if there is no damage.

The Mexican president stated that there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake so far and that the National Civil Protection Coordination is maintaining the revision protocol.
