Trump says it was ‘sarcastic’ by promising to end war in Ukraine in 24 hours

United States President Donald Trump said on Friday that it was “a little sarcastic” when he repeatedly said, as a White House candidate, that he would resolve the war between Russia and Ukraine in 24 hours-and even before taking office.

Trump was asked about his promise during an interview with the television program “Full Measter”, at a time when his administration still tries to negotiate a solution to the conflict, 54 days after the beginning of his second term.

“Well, I was being a little sarcastic when I said that,” Trump said in a video released before the episode that airs on Sunday. “What I really mean is that I would like to solve the problem and, I think, I think I will be successful,” said the president of the United States.

It was a rare confession of Trump, which has a long history of making exaggerated statements. Trump said in an interview with CNN in May 2023: “They are dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I will do that – I will do that in 24 hours. ”

“I will solve [a guerra na Ucrânia] Even before I became president, ”said Trump during his debate in September with then-president and presidential candidate Kamala Harris. “If I win, when I am elected, I will talk to one, I will talk to the other. I will add them, ”added the Republican.

His special envoy, Steve Witkoff, was in Moscow this week for talks about a US-proposed ceasefire, which Ukraine has accepted.

In the interview, Trump was also asked what the plan would be if Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, did not agree with a ceasefire in the war that began three years ago.

“Bad news for this world, because many people are dying,” Trump replied. “But I think, I think he [Putin] will agree. I think I know him very well and I think he will agree, ”added the president of the United States.
