Last week Ukraine accepted a 30 -day truce proposed by the United States, but Putin has not yet revealed to accept Trump’s plan to end the conflict
The negotiators involved in the Ukraine Peace Agreement have already discussed the possibility of “sharing certain assets” with Moscow, said US President Donald Trump this Sunday – the same day he announced that he will talk this Tuesday with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. Translating Trump’s words: Kiev must give some territory for this war to end.
These US President’s new statements appear a week after saying that Ukraine has accepted the US proposal for a truce for 30 days, now leaving Russia the responsibility of deciding whether or not to accept its proposal for a quick resolution for this conflict, which has been lasting for years. Putin’s response to the proposal has been ambiguous: the Russian leader said Moscow agrees “in theory”, but will also present strict conditions – namely “concessions” by Kiev.
Returning to Donald Trump’s Sunday statements: “We’re doing a great job – I think! – With Russia. Let’s see if we have something to announce to you, maybe until Tuesday. On Tuesday I will be talking to Putin, ”Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One during a White House flight after his weekend in Mar-Lago, Florida. And it shot: “A lot of work was done over the weekend, we want to see if we can end this war. Maybe we may, maybe not, but I think we have a good opportunity.”
Trump also stated that negotiators have already identified “several topics for discussion.” But essentially one: “Let’s talk about land. Many lands are quite different now than they were before war, as we know. Yes, let’s talk about land. Let’s also talk about centrals [elétricas]which is a big question. But I think we have already discussed a lot, very much, about it on both sides – Ukraine and Russia. We are already talking about this to divide certain assets. ”
The meetings between US negotiators and representatives from Ukraine and Russia continue this week, with US negotiators (although no details have been released about the participants) to travel to Russia to pursue the conversations.
Russia began to take parts of Ukraine as early as 2014, well before launching the large -scale invasion in 2022. Since this 2022 invasion, Ukraine has already lost control of about 11% of the territory. And the assignment of territory has been an irreconcilable theme for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In Europe, several leaders are also expressed fears about the idea of rewarding Putin for the invasion – a concern shared by the NATO, which questions the safety of the continent. But Putin, as already mentioned, has no intention to give up the regions he currently occupies.
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, told CNN on Sunday that ongoing negotiation has been “productive” and that Russian President “accepts President Trump’s philosophy” in a “solution -based” discussion. To CNN, Witkoff has not no use on territorial concessions.
