Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere: It has been politically unstable for a long time and its capital is dominated by rival armed gangs, which commit blackmail, murder, rape and kidnapping for ransom.
Armed groups have been struggling to control the Haitian capital Port-Au-Prince for several years. Their clashes have intensified in recent weeks, as rival gangs have been trying to expand their impact zones.
