Discover the 'method of the future' that promises to predict the number of the lottery

The possibility of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict the winning number of the lottery has always been seen as a concept closer to science fiction than reality. However, three Mathematics students at the University of Salentia, in Italy, decided to test this method and developed an algorithm to analyze standards of previous raffles of the lottery.

The result? Managed to collect 43,000 euros, according to the newspaper .

The method used in the lottery

The algorithm created by the students has analyzed the draws of the last two years, identifying which numbers came up most often.

Instead of betting on random or less common numbers – a strategy adopted by many players – they trusted the statistical frequency of the numbers drawn.

However, this approach raises important questions: if the lottery is, by definition, a game of pure chance, is there really a pattern in the raffles?

The analysis of an expert

Mathematician Frédéric Giroire, a researcher at the Center National de la Recherche Scientifi (CNRS) and the Institut National de Recherche in Informatique et en automique (Inria), analyzed the students’ experience and classified it as “counter-intricate.”

For Giroire, the classic understanding of mathematics suggests that each draw is an independent event, without any statistical relationship with the previous ones.

However, the researcher admits that in some cases statistical tests may reveal bias in raffles, either due to physical factors such as the weight or shape of the balls, which can slightly influence results, making some numbers more likely than others.

Coincidence or innovation?

Despite the success achieved by the students, Giroire points out that this does not mean that AI can predict winning numbers consistently.

For the researcher, the real impact of this technology would be rather in identifying possible draw failures.

So far, young mathematicians have not disclosed the exact details of their method, leaving open the issue of AI’s real impact on the planning of the bullies.

Conclusion

The experience of these students demonstrates that technology can be a powerful method for analyzing large data volumes and identifying patterns, but does not necessarily mean that it is possible to accurately predict the number of the lottery.

The question is: have they found a real pattern or have only benefited from chance?
