The United States court sentenced, on Wednesday (19), Greenpeace to pay compensation of more than $ 660 million (R $ 3.7 billion) to the energy company Energy Transfer (ET), after protests against the construction of the Dakota Access oillet.
The northern Dakota judge understood that the environmental group exceeded the reach of freedom of expression guaranteed by the country.
ET accused Greenpeace of orchestrating a campaign of violence and defamation during protests against the construction of the oillet, which took place between 2016 and 2017. The Court imposed the fine for loss and damage to three Greenpeace entities, citing accusations of invasion of property, disturbance, conspiracy and deprivation of access to properties.
The environmental group, who considers the case as an attempt to silence him, said he will appeal the sentence. In addition, Greenpeace Internacional filed a lawsuit against Energy Transfer in the Netherlands, accusing the company of using legal proceedings to suppress the dissent. An audience was scheduled for July 2.
The lawsuit in the US is based on the protests that occurred between 2016 and 2017 against the construction of Dakota Access. The Indigenous Tribe Sioux of Standing Rock, along with environmental movements, such as Greenpeace, joined thousands of protesters to try to prevent the construction of the pipeline stretch that, according to indigenous people, crosses sacred lands and threatens their sources of drinking water.
During the protests, hundreds of protesters were injured and others were arrested, leading the UN to express concern about possible violations of the rights of indigenous peoples.

Despite the resistance, the pipeline went into operation in 2017, and Energy Transfer continued with legal actions against Greenpeace.
