Vila Real de Santo António joins generations at the table with the project “Best Food + Health”

During April, the “Best Food + Health” project, promoted by the Municipal Health Office of the Vila Real de Santo António City Council, invites grandparents and grandchildren to share knowledge and flavors to the table, through a program specially dedicated to the appreciation of the Mediterranean diet, local gastronomic heritage and meeting generations.

Under the guidance of chefs Samuel Rosa and Jossara Martins, the workshops will take place on three Saturdays, in the municipal markets of the county, providing unique moments of recipe sharing, transmission of traditional knowledge and awareness to healthy diet habits.

Each session will start with the joint purchase of fresh products in local markets, followed by the preparation of the dishes and, finally, a tasting among all participants.

This initiative is integrated into the program “Take care of those who took care”, created by the municipality to promote the active and healthy aging of the county’s senior population. Through gastronomy and intergenerational sharing, workshops reinforce the importance of balanced diet and social life, contributing to the fight against isolation and a higher quality of life.

The “Best Food + Health” project sessions are scheduled for April 5, at the Vila Nova de Cacela market; April 12, at the Vila Real de Santo António Municipal Market; and April 19, at the Monte Gordo Municipal Market. Each meeting represents an opportunity to strengthen family ties and encourage conscious eating at all ages.

The closing of the program takes place on April 26, with the “Holy Meat Festival”, a mega barbecue that will turn the west zone of Monte Gordo beach into an authentic gastronomic celebration stage. With the presence of more than 10 national and international chefs, the event will highlight various meat making techniques, such as parrilla, clothesline and cruzeta, providing an unforgettable sensory experience.

In addition to the gastronomic aspect, the festival will feature live music, cultural performances and animation for all ages, creating a festive and inclusive environment.

Participation in workshops is free and open to the entire community, while access to the festival has a cost of 15 euros per person. The ticket includes a reusable sustainable kit (plate, cutlery and glass), in line with the Municipal Environmental Sustainability Policy.

The “Best Food + Health” project is part of the strategy of to streamline the local economy, value the Mediterranean diet and promote social and intergenerational inclusion. All initiatives are developed in collaboration with the Vila Real António Hospitality and Tourism School and other local entities.
