Three climbers died this Saturday on the summit of Monte Moncayo, in the northeast of Spain, the authorities announced, at a time when bad weather extends to the whole country after the passage of.

“We are shocked by the death of three climbers this afternoon at Moncayo,” said Pilar Alegría, a spokesman for the Spanish government, in a message published on social network X (former Twitter).

“Our thoughts are with their families and friends,” he added.

Moncayo, or San Miguel, is a mountain with 2300 meters of altitude, the highest of the central mountain system of Spain.

The climbers, who were part of a larger group from Madrid, probably slipped on an ice sign, according to the Spanish media.

A relief request was received shortly after 14:00 (local and Lisbon), and the firefighters arrived at the scene and provided “first aid to one of the victims who was still alive,” but eventually died, indicated on the social network X the authorities of Saragoça in the Aragon region.

“Due to bad weather, the helicopter rescue had to be suspended,” and finally “the bodies had to be brought down on foot, with the help of the civil guardian,” the Spanish police said authorities.

Almost all of Spain was hit Saturday by the Martinho depression (which also affected Portugal), the fourth to cross the country in less than two weeks, causing zones of 14 regions to be placed on a meteorological alert.
