The award was conceived by the Association to honor people or institutions that have stood out in promoting and defending press freedom – or whose performance demonstrates the importance of press freedom for society and democracies.
Last year, the winner of the award was the United Nations Education, Science and Culture) and his program of freedom of expression and security of journalists.
