The former minister and president of the TCU (Union Court of Auditors) Marcos Vilaça died on Saturday (29.mar.2025), in Recife (PE), at the age of 85. He was also a lawyer, essayist, poet and occupied the chair 26 of the ABL (Brazilian Academy of Letters).
According to the academy, death was due to a multiple organ failure. Vilaça was hospitalized at the Florence Clinic, in the Pernambuco capital.
He will be cremated. His ashes will be thrown on Boa Viagem beach, where are those of his wife Dona Maria do Carmo. The ritual meets a wish of the 2.
Who was Marcos Vilaça
Born on June 30, 1939, in Nazaré da Mata, Pernambuco, Marcos Vinicios Rodrigues Vilaça stands out for his performance in the cultural and political area, and has held important public positions.
He taught at UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) and at the Catholic University of Pernambuco. He also held functions as Secretary of Culture of the Ministry of Education and Culture, president of Funarte (National Arts Foundation) and was a member of the CFC (Federal Council of Culture).
He was nominated by José Sarney to the TCU in 1988 and assumed the presidency of the court from 1995 to 1996.
Among his most relevant works, they stand out Northeast: Dry & Wet (1972), BLUE RECIFE, SKY LIQUID (1972) e Time and Dream (1984).
In partnership with Roberto Cavalcanti, he published Colonel, Colonels: Heyday and decline of coronelismo in the Northeast (1965), considered a classic about the power structure in the Northeast.
He was elected at GLA on April 11, 1985, in the succession of Mauro Mota. It was received by the academic José Sarney. He chaired the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 2006 and 2007 and was elected president again in 2010 and 2011. He was also a member of the Pernambuco Academy of Letters.
