The Portuguese Air Force rescued a 77-year-old American citizen on Monday who needed urgent medical care while traveling on a cruise ship off the Azores.
The rescue occurred about 45 kilometers north of Terceira Island, with the EH-101 Merlin helicopter, from Squadron 752-Fenix, to take off from Air Base No. 4, in slabs at 9:55 am. After being recovered, the passenger was transported to São Miguel, where he received the necessary care before being referred to a hospital unit.
The operation was coordinated by the Lajes Search and Rescue Coordination Center, in response to a request from the Ponta Delgada Search and Maritime Search Coordination Center.
