After the decision of the US administration to impose nationwide duties on goods from the European Union, the Union will react peacefully, carefully pags and above all in a uniform way. This was stated on Thursday evening in the official statement of the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič. Informs the Brussels rapporteur TASR.
“We will calibrate our answer. We will not shoot from the side – we want to give the negotiations a chance to find a fair agreement in favor of both parties,” Šefčovič explained.
He stated that, on the basis of the authorization of the President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Leyen, he agreed with his US partners that he would organize negotiations through video conference on Friday to explore the best ways to move forward and find a way out of this “unnecessary and painful phase” by dealing with legitimate concerns on both sides.
He added that when reaching a convenient agreement, potential profits for the EU and the US will be unlimited, and this approach Brussels is promoting in transatlantic trade. “I will work on this continuously. If we fail to reach a fair agreement with our American partners, the EU will not be inactive. We are ready to introduce solid, effective but adequate countermeasures. The analytical work to guide our proposals is in full swing,” the Slovak European Commissioner described the situation.
In his words, this would not mean escalation of tensions, but “responsible protection of our businesses, jobs and consumers from the damage that the new tariffs will cause”. He stressed that any EUR 26 billion -announced measures announced in March after the US administration decision to introduce duties to the export of European steel and aluminum.
In his words, consultations on the next file of the countermeasure ended and the next step will be discussed as a European Commissioner with ministers of EU Member States trade at a working meeting in Luxembourg 7 April. The vote on these countermeasures is expected two days later, 9 April.
