The cost of living continues to weigh on the budget of many Portuguese families. To relieve part of this pressure, the government has announced an update of various social benefits. The measure covers supports attributed by Social Security, with an increase of 2.1% as of this April. In addition to the regular update, the amounts will be paid with retroactive.
What are the supports covered by the update?
According to work, solidarity and social security, the increase covers:
- Family allowance;
- Prenatal family allowance;
- Bonus by disability;
- Subsidy for assistance to the third person;
- Increase for situations of monoparentality and numerous families;
- Guarantee for childhood.
The death allowance (funeral subsidy) rises slightly more, with an increase of 2.6%.
According to the guardianship, these changes result from the update of the Index of Social Support (IAS), and represent a budget impact of 31.8 million euros.

For family allowance:
- Children up to 36 months in the 1st level: € 186.87 (+3.84 €);
- Children over 36 months: 73.51 € (+1.51 €).
Prenatal family allowance:
- 1st level: 186.87 €
- 2nd echelon: 158.17 €
- 3rd level: 129.23 €
- 4th EXCHANGE: 86.53 €
Bonus by Disability:
- Up to 14 years: 72.59 €
- From 14 to 18 years: 105.73 €
- From 18 to 24 years: 141.52 €
Third person assistance subsidy:
Funeral subsidy:
- New value: 261.25 € (corresponding to 50% of IAS)
Retroactive payments included
Payment of new amounts should be processed during April, including retroactive relative differences since January.
The beneficiaries of these social security supports do not need to perform any additional procedure: the update is automatic.
