After a first failed attempt, the Constitutional Court (TC) unanimously approved the denomination “AD – PSD/CDS coalition”. The Monarchical Popular Party (PPM) will appeal the decision.
After dissociated from the PPM for early May 18, PSD and CDs were forced to change the name of the coalition (AD, or democratic alliance) that won the previous legislative.
Earlier this week, the first proposal “AD – Democratic Alliance – PSD/CDS”, claiming that it could mislead voters, as this time will not include the PPM, contrary to what happened in the elections of a year ago.
According to the TC, there would be a risk of “voters to be able to think there is no difference between” the democratic alliance that won the elections in 2024 and the coalition that competes this year, “because the distinctive element in the designation under appreciation – PSD/CDS – does not appear enough to remove the existence of this risk”.
This Wednesday, the PSD secretaries general (Hugo Soares) e do CDS-PP (Pedro Morais Soares) announced the new proposal at a press conference, which was approved at night by the national councils of the two parties unanimously.
“We are absolutely convinced that this denomination we chose corresponds to what was the judgment of the Constitutional Court that we were aware this week and that fulfills all legal criteria So that it can be accepted and for the coalition to go to votes by the name that is known to the Portuguese, ”said Hugo Soares.
The PSD leader considered that this denomination, in addition to fulfilling all the requirements of “ respect for the memory of all previous coalitions”, Leaves“ clearly expressed that this is a coalition only between the PSD and the CDS-PP ”, without the PPM that integrated the democratic alliance in the legislatures and European 2024.
Upset PPM
The Monarchical Popular Party will appeal to the Plenary of the Constitutional Court of the decision that approved the denomination “AD – PSD/CDS coalition”.
