Russia announced on Monday that its troops advanced in the east of Ukraine near the Luhansk regionwhere they threaten the last areas under the control of Ukrainian troops. TASR informs this based on the DPA report.

Ukraine since the beginning of the war in 2014 and the subsequent nationwide Russian invasion in 2022 almost completely lost control of the Luhansk region. At present, only a small strip of territories around the village of Hrekivka on the border with the neighboring Donetsk area is controlled.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday that its soldiers occupied the settlement Katerynivka in the Donetsk region south of the Hrekivka. According to DPA, this would mean a significant symbolic breakthrough for Moscow. Control of Katerynivka and the nearby village of Novomychjivka would allow Russian forces to threaten the tulle of the last Ukrainian troops in the whole Luhansk region.

Ukrainian military bloggers informed about the Russian procedure around Katerynivka, but did not confirm her conquest. On Monday Ukrainian General Staff informed about 165 armed collisions in the east of the country.

The Luhansk region is largely under control of the pro -Russian forces Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2014, when the separatists supported by Moscow declared the establishment of the People’s Republic of Luhansk.

After the beginning of the nationwide invasion in February 2022, the Russian forces gradually occupied almost the rest of the area, including large cities such as Northodoneck or Lysyčansk. After a manipulated referendum in September 2022, Russia annexed the area and considers the People’s Republic of Luhansk as its federal entity.
