Understand the procedure

The procedure, an exploiting laparotomy, was necessary due to intestinal adhesions and damage to the abdominal wall, sequelae of Bolsonaro stabbed during the 2018 presidential campaign. According to doctors, surgery was one of the most complex faced by the former president, who has undergone six attacks related to the attack.

Initially expected to last six hours, the operation extended for 12 hours due to the severity of the condition. Bolsonaro remains at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of DF Star Hospital in Brasilia, with no forecast of discharge. Doctors point out that the next 48 hours are crucial for recovery, which will be slow and will require intensive care.

Bolsonaro spoke

On his social networks, Bolsonaro thanked the support received and said, “We’ll be back!” He also explained that the obstruction was caused by folds in the small intestine.

The choice of the medical team for this surgery was made by Michelle Bolsonaro, with the endorsement of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. The procedure was conducted by surgeon Claudio Birolini, replacing the doctor Antonio Luiz Macedo, responsible for previous surgeries.

Since the attack in 2018, Bolsonaro has faced various health complications, resulting in multiple hospitalizations and surgeries.
