Considered the “sports Oscar”, the awards have existed since 1999 and encompasses different categories, among them: Male sportsman of the year, female sportsman of the year, team of the year, revelation of the year, return of the year (Comeback), athlete with disabilities, action sports athlete of the year and the sports / inspirational award.
Sportsmen are elected by a committee of members of the Laureus World Sports Academy. In Brazil, former soccer player Cafu, swimmer Daniel Dias and former actor Emerson Fittipaldi participate in the organization. There are also two Brazilian ambassadors: Lucas di grassi, from motor racing, and Flávio Grassi, from Judo.
