Deputy claims to be the target of a ‘personal persecution’ by the former mayor, Arthur Lira, PP de Alagoas
The federal deputy of Rio de Janeiro filed an appeal in the Constitution and Justice Commission () of the House of Representatives, contesting the process that can lead to his cancellation. In his argument, he points to unconstitutionalities and the lack of proportionality in the procedure, as well as claiming that he is being the subject of a “personal persecution” by the former mayor of the Alagoas PP.
The Ethics Commission had already approved the cassation process on April 9. In response to this situation, Glauber decided to start a hunger strike, which ended after an understanding with the current mayor, Hugo Motta, from the Paraíba Republicans. In the appeal, Glauber’s defense claims that there was abuse of power by Lira and that the rapporteur of the case, Paulo Magalhães, from the Bahia PSD, disregarded evidence and testimonies that were presented.
The deputy criticizes the sanction of cassation, considering it disproportionate, especially when compared to other cases where parliamentarians did not face severe punishment for aggression or crimes. He requests the process to be filed or that the penalty be revised, as well as requesting the removal of the rapporteur of the case.
The beginning of the cassation process dates back to an incident in April 2024, when Glauber assaulted a member of the Free Brazil Movement (MBL). The deputy justifies his action by stating that he was provoked by offenses directed to his mother, who was sick at the time. During his hunger strike, he received support from several groups, and the agreement with Motta established that the vote of the case in the plenary will not occur before 60 days after the decision of the CCJ.
