Support from companies to renewable energy sources has grown, says research

London, April 22, 2025 – A global historical research with business executives in 15 countries shows overwhelming support for a rapid transition from fossil fuels to renewable electricity.

The data indicate a global inflection point, with 97% of leaders of medium and large companies supporting the removal of coal and other fossil fuels, with almost 78% supporting the move to an electrical system based on renewable energies by 2035 or earlier.

As world leaders finalize their next round of National Climate Plans (NDCs), companies’ message is unambiguous: renewable energy is the best way to economic growth, energy safety and long -term competitiveness.

The research, conducted in the main economies and emerging markets by Savanta and commissioned by E3G, Beyond Fossil Fuels and We Mean Business Coalition, emphasizes an accelerated corporate change of fossil fuels for renewables. “Potentialization: Business perspectives on change to renewable electricity” also serve as a warning: most companies suggest that they will be relocated if governments do not act.

  • Competitiveness at stake: Half of business leaders say it will relocate their operations (52%) and supply chains (49%) for markets with better access to renewable energy -based energy systems within five years
  • Energy security is critical: Three bedrooms (75%) of executives associate renewable energies with stronger energy security. 78% of German business leaders believe that an accelerated renewable transition will reduce Germany exposure to volatile energy imports.
  • Economic growth and jobs: 77% bind renewable energies to economic growth, while 75% see them as fundamental for job creation.
  • Rapid coal transition: Almost nine out of ten (87%) of business executives who want their government to prioritize investment in renewable energy want them to stop using coal electricity in the next decade. More than two fifths (43%) of medium and large companies plan to stop using coal in their own operations by 2030, with more than a quarter (27%) intending to follow the example by 2035.
  • There is no room for new gas : Two thirds (67%) of executives want coal to be eliminated and replaced by renewable energy, networks and storage – without blocking the new gas infrastructure.
