Lula travels to Pope Francis Funeral on Thursday night (24)

The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) travel this Thursday (24) to Rome, Italy, in order to participate in the funeral of papa Franciscowho died last Monday (21).

Representatives of the three powers will accompany the petista: the president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), LUÍS ROBERTO BARROSOand the presidents of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) and Gave it alarthrumb (Union-AP).

The entourage boards at 10 pm this Thursday and arrives on Friday (25) to Europe. O next Saturday (26). The first lady Janja da Silva will also accompany the president on the trip.

The entourage is expected to return to Brasilia on Saturday, after the funeral.

As showed the CNNthis will be the second presence of the petista in a funeral of a pontiff. He was in 2005 in the farewell of John Paul 2nd. The next Pope will be the fourth seen by Lula while holding the position of president.

Pope Francis’ death

on Monday as a result of a stroke and irreversible heart failure. He was hospitalized for almost 40 days at Gemelli Hospital because of pneumonia in both lungs.

In the second, Lula declared official mourning of seven days in the country and publicly regretted the death of the pontiff.

“Francisco was a pope of all, but mainly from the excluded, the poorest, the wronged, the immigrants, the no voice, the victims of hunger and abandonment,” said the president in a video published on social networks.

Since the Pope took office, Lula met with him three times in person.
