The city of Coquimbo, in northern Chile, recorded two low-magnitude seismic shoots on Wednesday (23), the eve of the match between Palestinian and Cruzeiro, for the third round of the group and the South American Cup. The confrontation is scheduled for this Thursday (24), at 21h30 (Brasília), at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso Municipal Stadium.
According to the University of Chile’s National Seismological Center, the first tremor occurred at 8:24 pm (local time), with a magnitude of 4.1, at a depth of 62 km. The epicenter was located 11 km north of the Punitaqui commune.
The intensity of the earthquake was classified as IV on the Mercalli scale in Punitaqui and III in locations such as Monte Patria, Ovalle, Vicuña, Combarbalá and Río Hurtado. There was no record of damage or interruptions in essential services.
The second shake was recorded at 11:21 pm (local time), with a magnitude of 5.3, at a depth of 32 km. The epicenter was identified 14 km southwest of Fray Jorge National Park, also in the Coquimbo region. Mercalli intensity was IV in areas such as La Serena (located about 10.8 km from the stadium where the match will be held), Ovalle and Cinnamon.
In Monte Patria, Punitaqui and other localities of the region, the intensity varied between II and III. Also according to the authorities, there is no chance of training of tsunamis on site.
Local records
According to the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred), the two events were considered of less intensity and did not cause damage to people or critical infrastructure. The agency continues to monitor the situation, but has not issued alerts or recommendations that directly impact the game.
The national seismological center stresses that low magnitude seismos are common in northern Chile, one of the most active areas of the world in tectonic activity. Because of this, the shaken shakes in recent hours were practically imperceptible near Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso Stadium, the place of the match between.
Itatiaia reporter, Emerson Pancieri was at the scene to do the AE reported the situation. “I confess I didn’t even feel it, but it happened (the tremor). There were two, but asking the people here at the hotel reception where we are, they said ‘it’s very normal’ for them,” he said.
The game is expected to occur normally, without any change in programming or risks to those involved.
