Brazilian triathlete Mara Flávia died this Saturday (18) during a competition in Texas, in the United States. The death was confirmed by the organization of the event, on a social network, and by people close to the 38-year-old woman, who lived in São Paulo.

Mara participated in Iron Man – one of the main competitions in the sport – in the American state. She disappeared while crossing Woodlands Lake, in Montgomery County, which was approximately four kilometers long, according to local press.

According to the CBS channel, the swimming stage would start at around 6:30 am. Authorities received notice that a participant was missing around 6 am. The body was reportedly removed from the lake at around 9am, after an operation made difficult by low water visibility.

“We regret to inform you of the death of a participant during the swimming leg of the IRONMAN Texas triathlon held today. We send our most sincere condolences to the athlete’s family and friends and offer our support at this very difficult time. We also thank the rescuers for the care they provided.”, published the event profile on Facebook.

Mara had published four days earlier, on her Instagram profile, a photo with the message: “Enjoy this trip on the bullet train that is life. And even with the speed of the machine, obscuring the landscape, look out the window, because at any moment the train will leave you at the eternal station”. In the same post, friends and acquaintances mourned his death.

The athlete accumulated more than 58 thousand followers on her profile, where she shared her training routine – some of them in the capital of São Paulo. His last publication was hours before the test.

Mara was also a journalist, specializing in political journalism and marketing.
