Shopping Pátio Higienópolis states that the demonstration occurred inside the venture “was closed and occurred peacefully”. “We reinforce our commitment to respect for the right to free expression, within the limits of the regulation of the enterprise,” he said.

After accessing the mall’s premises, protesters hung some of the posters in the central span – at least one store even closed the doors. They would have been within the venture for about an hour, from 1:40 pm until around 2:40 pm.

The act also had a track against the eviction, by the Government of São Paulo, from Favela do Moinho, considered the last community still standing in downtown São Paulo.

Understand the case

The case occurred in the mall’s food court, on April 17. A white teenager, a student of the same school as the victims, was questioned by security if a girl and a black boy, who were close to her, would be bothering her or asking for money. The São Paulo reported that the incident would be determined by the 77th Police District (Santa Cecília), “for the appropriate measures and clarification of the facts”.

At the time, the Team College expressed “deep repudiation”. “In addition to the unjustifiable approach, young people were warned by mall employees with mentions of the prohibition of ‘requesting alms in the room’, in a clear demonstration of prejudice and racial discrimination,” the college said.

“We regret that, in the middle of 2025, we are still required to protect our children and adolescents from violence that derive from structural racism. A space in which black young people are constantly watched, questioned or treated as a threat cannot be considered safe to anyone,” he added.

The mall lamented the case and said it was in contact with the family. “The behavior adopted does not reflect the values of the mall and the theme is being treated with maximum seriousness,” he replied. It also pointed out that it has a “frequent training and literacy grid”, which will be reinforced to reiterate “non -negotiable commitment to the construction of a truly safe and welcoming space for all people”.
