Minister Cristiano Zanin, president of the First Class of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), had officially notified the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) about the opening of the criminal action against Deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) for the coup plan.
The deputy is a defendant in the same process as former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for allegedly being part of the “crucial core” of the coup contract that was beginning after the defeat in the 2022 elections.
The criminal case was filed on April 11, after the publication of the judgment of the First Class of the Supreme Court that received the complaint of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), and is not expected to be tried.
It is standard that the presidents of the House and Senate are informed when a parliamentarian becomes a defendant. The Constitution allows legislative houses to suspend the progress of the process, provided that the decision has the support of the majority of the plenary. The rule, however, is valid only for crimes after diplomation.
The PL, a party, said it will request the suspension of the criminal action until the end of the deputy’s term.
Alexandre Ramagem was director of Abin in the Bolsonaro government and, in 2022, was elected federal deputy.
