Zelenski insists

A few hours earlier, the Ukrainian president reiterated today that he believes that Crimea belongs to Ukraine despite its annexation by Russia in 2014, stressing that Kiev’s position on this issue remains “the same” despite US pressures.

“Our position remains the same (…) All the territories that have been temporarily occupied belong to Ukraine,” Zelenski told reporters, while the recognition of Crimea as Russian is foreseen, according to the media, in the US plan for the cessation of hostilities.

Positive steps are seen by Moscow

Moscow described the three -hour meeting today by Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Whitkov, in which he approached the US and Russian positions, said in the US and Russian positions.

Whitkov met Putin in Moscow today at a critical juncture, as Trump has described it, the moment of diplomacy to end the war in Ukraine.

“This debate has allowed Russia and the US to approach their positions, not only for Ukraine but also in a number of other international issues,” Usakov told reporters.

“As for the Ukrainian crisis itself, the debate focused particularly on the likelihood of resume negotiations between representatives of the Russian Federation and Ukraine.”

Russia and Ukraine have not held direct talks from the first weeks of the Russian invasion, which began in February 2022. There has been no Witkov’s position so far for the outcome of the meeting.

This visit to Moscow, the fourth since he took over Trump’s duties, takes place after talks this week, during which Ukrainian and European officials have rejected some of the US proposals on how to resolve the war in Ukraine.
