The trial on the arrest of the former president was resumed by the Federal Supreme Court (). Collor was sentenced to a penalty of 8 years and 6 months for corruption related to Operation Lava Jato, was determined by the minister. The magistrate considered that there are no more resources available to contest the conviction and penalty should start to be long. The vote, which had been suspended at the minister’s request, was restarted after majority of the ministers manifest in favor of maintaining the arrest in a virtual session.

Mendes, given the support for the continuity of the penalty, decided to withdraw his prominent request for a face -to -face analysis. In May 2023, Collor was convicted of receiving R $ 20 million in fees from UTC Engenharia. The Attorney General’s Office accused him of using his political influence to favor BR Distribuidora contracts between 2010 and 2014, which culminated in his conviction.

Collor’s defense has had several appeals denied by the Supreme Court. The rapporteur of the case, Alexandre de Moraes, stressed that the requests submitted had a procrastinatory character, which justifies the immediate execution of the penalty. Collor is currently in a special wing of the Baldomero Cavalcanti de Oliveira Prison, located in Maceió.

Recently, the former president’s defense requested his transfer to the home regime, alleging health problems. However, during a hearing, Collor denied having any health condition that justified this change of regime.
