The Latvian citizen was sentenced in his homeland to a six -year imprisonment for fighting in Ukraine on the side of the Russian forces. This was announced on Tuesday by the Latvian Prosecutor’s Office, TASR reports on the basis of AFP report.
Latvian, whose name was not published, was detained last October after trying to illegally cross the border from Russia back to Latvia. He entered the Russian army, according to the information of the Latvian media in 2023. It served first in the city of Criebabinsk in the central part of Russia, where he joined the artillery unit 80. In October 2024 he was sent to Ukraine.
A man’s motive unclear
The Latvian Prosecutor’s Office did not state what led the man to join the Russian army or why he later tried to return to Latvia by illegal crossing the border.
The Court of Riga acknowledged him as guilty of three separate crimes: joining the Russian army, participation in fighting and illegal crossing of borders. He ordered him six -year prison and two years of judicial supervision. The prosecutor’s office informed that the man had admitted his guilt and expressed regret, which is considered a mitigating circumstance.
On the side of the Ukrainian forces, the unpublished number of Latvian volunteers is also fighting against Russia. Those – as in the neighboring Baltic countries of Estonia and Lithuania – are not criminally prosecuted after returning to their homeland, AFP explains.
