The Spanish government has set up a commission for an investigation into a massive power outage that hit the Iberian Peninsula, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said.

The Spanish government has set up a commission to investigate the causes of a massive power outage that was caught on Monday by the Iberian Peninsula, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Tuesday. The European Commission (EC) also wants to know the cause of one of the biggest outages in EU history to get the incident in the future. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.

“All necessary measures will be taken to prevent it from repeating,” Sánchez said at a press conference. He rejected the claims of the far right -wing VOX party, which attributed a shortage of nuclear energy in the country. “Those who associate this incident with nuclear energy deficiency, deceive or prove their ignorance,” Sánchez said.

Exclusion of the cyberstrap

The Spanish energy company Red Eléctrica de España (Ree) and the Portuguese government excluded a cyber attack as the cause of Monday’s failure. Reuters reported that the Spanish Supreme Court will investigate whether there was indeed a cyber attack behind the failure. According to the Court’s statement, it follows that, in such a case, the incident would be investigated as a terrorist act.

EC spokeswoman Paula Pinhova on Tuesday stressed the close cooperation of Brussels with national electrical network operators in both affected countries. The EC will “examine very carefully” the causes of the failure how well the EU was prepared and what lessons “can be deduced from such an event”.

Rejection of speculation

According to DPA, the EC refused speculation that the cause of the failure was a high proportion of renewable energy. “Spanish and Portuguese operators have good experience with high volume of renewable electricity production,” the spokeswoman said.
