Who are the hethis

The Houthis rebels, also known as Anso Allah, are a political and military movement that mainly represents the Zaidi sect, a strand of Shiite Islam in Yemen. They consider themselves part of Iran’s “resistance axis”, which also includes Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah.

Experts in Yemen, where Houthis expanded their control during civil war years, say the group seems to be motivated mainly for domestic reasons and support, although it maintains ideological alignment with Iran.

From November 2023 to January 2025, the Houthis rebels attacked more than 100 merchant ships and sank 2, killing 4 sailors. The attacks were declared to press the end of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
