Government will send first 4,500 communications in the coming days to foreigners with requests for denied residence

The government of Portugal confirmed on Saturday (3.br.2025) that will send notifications to 18,000 immigrants to leave the national territory voluntarily. The first 4,574 notifications will be sent in the coming days. The measure is near the Portuguese parliamentary elections.

The announcement was made by the presidential minister, António Leitão Amaro, in an interview with journalists. The decision comes after the analysis of requests for residence by AIMA (Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum).

The initiative takes place in an electoral context where the center-right government of the Democratic Alliance adopted migratory control as one of its campaign flags for the parliamentary election. The recipients of the notifications are immigrants whose requests for residence, made via the manifestation of interest, were analyzed and denied by AIMA.

Among the 400,000 processes under analysis, Brazilians constitute the largest group. Notifications will be sent to immigrants throughout Portuguese territory, according to the distribution of cases analyzed by the country’s immigration agency.

Immigrants will have 20 days from receipt of notification to voluntarily leave the country. The Portuguese government may start expulsion processes if the notifieds do not leave within the period stipulated.
