At the age of 78 he died on Sunday Former German Formula 1 rider and 24 hours of Le Mans Jochen Mass. His family and AFP informed about it.
Mass started his F1 career in the Surtees team, and later worked in the McLaren stable. The only victory in the royal motoring series reached the GP of Spain in 1975. However, the race was prematurely ended after a serious accident of his teammate Rolf Stommelen, who died several spectators, and Mass scored only half the points for the triumph.
He left Formula 1 in 1982. Seven years later he won the prestigious endurance race Le Mans 24. “With deep sorrow, we announce that Jochen Mass died today after complications caused by a stroke he suffered in February,” His family said in a statement.
