Increased online fraud and with cards worry consumer in the period of sales

FEBRABAN (Brazilian Federation of Banks) warned on Monday (05.MAI.2025) for the increase in online shopping blows before Mother’s Day on Sunday (11.MAI.2025). The date is one of the most important for retail because of the significant increase in sales.

The organization is concerned with the occurrence of fraud involving fake pages that simulate digital stores and nonexistent promotions. Schemes are disseminated by emails, SMS and WhatsApp messages.

Criminals can also resort to cloning renowned retailers. They subtly change the email address, adding a letter or replacing characters.

Another method used by scammers is the creation of fake stores on social networks. Stores are characterized by tempting offerings and false positive testimonials. The goal is to attract victims.

According to Febraban, the false sale coup was the 2nd most reported approach by clients to associated institutions in 2024.

In addition to online blows, the Federation also recommends care for card purchases. The blows include the exchange of the physical card for a fake during a transaction and the use of machines with damaged display to charge higher than agreed. It is always recommended to check the value on the machine screen and check the returned card.
