In the Peruvian Andes, around 430 kilometers north of Lima at over 3000 meters, the archaeological arcade in Chavín de Huántar is located. The monumental site with its temple ruins, which is located in today’s Ancash area, is considered a religious and political center of Chavín culture, the influence of which extended down to the coastal regions. This early pre-Colombic high culture had already experienced its heyday for around 2000 years before the Inca empire dominated the Andes. Today, the over 3000 year old Chavín de Huántar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
