We need partners who want to grow up with us, says Lula

In Beijing, Brazilian president declares that Latin America cannot repeat the mistakes of the past and needs to act as a block

The President (PT) declared this Thursday (13.MAI.2025) that Latin America should come together and seek trade agreements with “partners who want to grow ” with the countries of the region. The president’s speech in Beijing (China) was a nod by the Chinese side of the trade war that was fought between the Asian nation and the United States.

Without quoting the US, Lula said the region needs to analyze the mistakes made in the last century, which led Latin America to become a portrait of poverty.

“Or we join us among us and look for partners who want, along with us, to build a shared world, or Latin America will continue to be a region that represents poverty”he said in his speech at the China-Celac Forum (Latin American and Caribbean Community).

Despite waving the Chinese side of the trade war, with and in favor of multilateralism, Lula’s discourse focused on the union between the Latin American countries.

Lula said that the region should not conform to being a zone of dispute of influences, but needs to seek protagonism and greater representativeness in.

“It does not depend on the president [da China] Xi Jinping [PCCh]does not depend on the president of the United Statesit does not depend on the European Union, it simply depends if we want to be big or if we want to be small ”said Lula.

Lula’s agenda

In addition to the China-Celac Forum, A (13.MAI) includes meetings with at least 5 authorities, 3 Chinese leaders and 2 South American presidents, all aligned on the left. Here’s the meetings of the Brazilian President:

  • President from China, Xi Jinping (PCCHE);
  • Prime Minister of China, I read Qiang (PCCH);
  • Chairman of the Permanent Committee of the National Assembly of China – equivalent to the president of Congress – Zhao Leji (CCCH);
  • President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro (Human Colombia, Left);
  • President of Chile, Gabriel Boric (wide front, left).

After the bilateral meeting with China at the People’s Palace, Lula will end his visit to the country with a restricted dinner at Xi Jinping’s official residence. In addition to the presidents, the first ladies and 3 guests from each country will participate in the dinner.
