United States President Donald Trump charged Syria’s leader on Wednesday Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the normalization of relations with Israel. It would be a counterpart to the withdrawal of American sanctions against the country.
It was the first meeting between an American president and a Syrian leader in 25 years.
Donald Trump praised Ahmed al-Sharaa, who ascended to power after leading a uprising against the Bashar al-Assad regime at the end of last year.
The rapprochement between Trump and Al-Sharaa is a nuisance to the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, responsible for the occupation of parts of the Syrian territory and the maintenance of bombing to the region even after the exchange of government.
The end of American sanctions is essential for the international legitimacy of the new Syrian government. After Trump’s announcement, thousands went to the streets of Damascus to celebrate the decision.
On Wednesday, Trump also conditioned the negotiation of the nuclear agreement with Iran at the end of the “resistance axis.” The group, led by the Republic of Aiatollah, also includes Hezbollah, Hamas and Houthis.
Donald Trump has even classified the alliance as “the most destructive force of the Middle East.”
“I want to agree with Iran. I want to do something if possible. But for this to happen, they need to stop sponsoring terror. Suspending war by power of attorney and ceasing to search for nuclear weapons permanently and verifically. They can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
Since the beginning of last month, USA and Iran have been in four rounds of negotiations focused on the Iranian nuclear program. Trump has repeatedly said that he believes an agreement is possible, but the time for this is running out.
In Iran, Chancellor Abbas Araqchi called Trump’s statements.
“It’s really a bad luck. This level of deception – that he (Trump) ignores all Israel’s threats and Israel’s war crimes in the region. And instead try to introduce Iran as the threat. This is pure deceit and an attempt to change the place of true threats. Who killed 60,000 people in Gaza? Who caused all this destruction?” He said.
