Midd warns of people with sloppy, unkempt or questionable hygiene

The secret services of Latvia are alerting the population to the possibility that there are Russian saboteurs or spies in their country and, in this sense, have launched a practical guide on how to identify Moscovite intruders.

According to the MIDD – one of the three secret service agencies of Latvia, people with sloppy, unleashed, dismissed or questionable hygiene can be signs of a spy at Kremlin orders.

The secrets of Latvia also refer to people who have too much -intruded with local inhabitants, short haircuts, military style or tourists who do not know the region, but have an unusual amount of outdoor survival equipment such as specialized medical kits, maps or radios.

MIDD, according to the annual report cited by, also warns that Russian operational has improved their ability to act in recent years, with formation in chameleonic disguises that make them more difficult to identify.

“The Ukrainian experience shows that Russian special services are able to adapt to the environment and circumstances in which sabotage-spinning groups are used,” says MIDD, noting that “its members may not visually correspond to the classic recognition sabotage profile.”

What if identifying a spy?

MIDD warns all citizens not to try to capture or neutralize suspects, highlighting that police and military are best equipped to take control of the situation in case of suspicion.

The secrets remember that these spies can be part of larger groups that remain in the vicinity of sensitive places, passing through humanitarian workers. Another suspicious option to take into account is groups that sleep in remote areas without showing any interest in nature.

The public broadcaster of Latvia also informed citizens that state security services had issued similar but less detailed advice for the public to communicate suspicious activities for two years after the total invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Over the past few months, the world has watched the increased tensions between Russia and the West. The member countries of the European Union and NATO have been on the maximum alert for Russian sabotage, in the middle of a wave of cases suspected of cybers, and damage to submarine cables attributed to Moscow. Kremlin has been denying all accusations.
