Os USA and the United Arab Emirates will come together to build a massive complex of data centers in Abu Dhabi to advance the abilities of artificial intelligence With 5 gigawatts of capacity – enough to feed a large city.
The agreement, announced on Thursday (15) during the visit of US President Donald Trump, to the UE, will mark the largest implementation of data center outside the United States, according to the Department of Commerce.
The project will start with a 1 gigawatt AI data center, but eventually will extend for 16 square kilometers.
The project is also expected to expand the presence of US AI and cloud computing companies in the Middle East, allowing them to better serve the global south.
No company has been appointed in the announcement of the Department of Commerce, although Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was seen at one of Trump’s meetings in the EAU. Nvidia refused to comment.
Trump has been working to boost AI investment, as the success of US technology companies is seen as fundamental to maintaining the country’s position as global superpower.
“By extending the main American technological structure to an important strategic partner in the region, this agreement is a significant milestone in achieving US President Trump’s view of AI,” Terard Lutnick Secretary Howard, said in a statement.
EAU also expressed the desire to become a global leader in artificial intelligence until 2031.
Prior to Trump’s visit, the EAU Minister of Education, Sarah Al Amiri, said the country seeks to diversify its economy, especially in the areas of AI and technology.
AI infrastructure investments are seen as crucial to ensure the region’s future post-petroleum.
The White House also announced on Thursday an agreement by which the EAU pledged to build or finance data centers in the United States that they are “at least as large and powerful” as the EAU.
