About 200 women of popular, black, indigenous, youth and LGBTQia+ from more than 20 Latin American, Caribbean and Africa countries will participate between May 22, 2025 in the Latinas Conecta in Recife (PE).
The international event, held by the Update Institute in partnership with 12 organizations, proposes to articulate actions of political formation, combat violence and community communication.
The meeting also marks the launch of mapping made in partnership with the Better Politics Foundation, which identified and analyzed 207 initiatives that work to expand the representation of women in the region’s politics.
The report is the result of more than a year of operation with initiatives from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.
“More than adding forces, connects Latinas wants to reverberate possible actions, alliances and futures,” says Carol Althaller, executive director of the Update Institute.
“Democracy only becomes real when recognizing those who already build it every day in the territories. These women are formulating concrete solutions, supported by ancestry, solidarity and political courage. With mapping, we want to show that they are no exception,” he adds.
The program includes an ancestral opening ceremony, more than 20 debate tables, presence of leaders such as Epsy Campbell, former Costa Rica vice-president, EE Robeyonce Lima, former state deputy in Pernambuco, as well as exhibition of a documentary about cultural activities are also planned.
Other confirmed presences are those of Valdecir Nascimento, the articulation of Brazilian black women, Paola Cabezas, national deputy of Ecuador, Mikaelah Drullard, activist and writer black transvestite), and Leonela Massocolo, Angolan activist.
