The Russian authorities classified, on Monday, 19, Amnesty International as an “undesirable organization”, status that, according to a 2015 law, makes any crime involvement with these entities. The decision, announced by the office of the Attorney General of Russia in an online statement, is another chapter in intense repression against critics of the Kremlin journalists and activists, who worsened in an unprecedented way after the Ukraine invasion of Moscow in February 2022.

With this designation, the International Human Rights Group must interrupt all its activities in the country, and those who cooperate or support the organization can be prosecuted criminally.

Currently, the Russian list of “unwanted organizations” includes 223 entities, including important press independent vehicles and human rights groups.

Russia classifies Amnesty International as 'undesirable organization'

Founded in 1961, Amnesty International documents and denounces human rights violations around the world and campaigns for the liberation of people considered unfairly prey.

The organization has published reports about the Russian War in Ukraine, accusing Moscow of crimes against humanity, as well as criticizing Kremlin’s repression to dissidents, which in recent years has reached thousands of people.

In the statement issued on Monday, Russian Attorney General accused the group of promoting “Russophobic Projects” and activities aimed at Russia’s “political and economic isolation”.
