With this result, the PS comes almost tied with the arrival And compared to the same results last year, also without emigration, they lost about 365,000 votes in a year.
This is the third worst result in the history of the PS in terms of percentage, having the mark only worse only in 1985, with Almeida Santos, and in 1987, with Vitor Constâncio.
Pedro Nuno assumes responsibility
In the speech in which he assumed the defeat, the leader of the PS assumed the responsibility of the result, said he is no longer secretary general If “you can be” and you don’t want to “be a hindrance to the decisions” that the PS has to make.

Throughout the campaign, Pedro Nuno Santos was convinced in the PS’s victory and that he would defeat AD and the polls, which gave disadvantage to the socialists.
Nevertheless, the PS was the only party with elected throughout the electoral circles of the national territory: the arrival failed in Bragança and AD in Portalegre.
PS He had lost first place in seven circles electoral
Compared to the elections of a year ago, also under the leadership of Pedro Nuno Santos, the socialists lost their first place in seven electoral circles In which they had won in 2024: Lisbon, Setúbal, Portalegre, Beja, Santarém, Coimbra and Castelo Branco.
