US begins to suspend sanctions against Syria after almost 25 years

SAO PAULO, SP (Folhapress)-The United States on Friday (23) after 24 years of economic measures against the country motivated by the civil war between the bashar al-Assad regime and rebel groups-which overthrew the dictatorship in December 2024 and today conduct a transitional government.

The US Treasury Department has issued an authorization to the Syrian government, led by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, so that it can carry out transactions with companies and entities that have business with the US government. The same authorization was also issued to the country’s Central Bank and state -owned companies.

This was the main economic sanction against the Assad regime -contact with companies integrated into the American financial system, a medium -sized country faces serious difficulties attracting investments and developing their economy.

“This decision will allow new investments in the private sector consistently with the strategy of placing the US in the first place of President Donald Trump,” the Treasury said in a statement.

The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, also paused other sanctions for 180 days as a first sign of support for the Govenro de Al-Sharaa. According to the folder, the US do not want to “prevent Syria’s reconstruction and recovery”.

The first US sanctions against the country were imposed in April 2011 by the government of Democratic President Barack Obama. Prior to that, punctual sanctions against Assad and his father, also dictator Hafez al-Assad, had already been used by Washington.

The decision to suspend sanctions was announced by Trump during his recent trip to the Middle East. According to the American press, the measure was the result of negotiations with Saudi Arabia, which also organized a meeting between the Republican and Al-Sharaa.

On Tuesday (20), the European Union also announced that it will suspend sanctions against Damascus, including the freezing of assets of its central bank and an embargo against the oil sector.
