Extension of the agreement, which will be in force until July 9, happens after ‘very pleasant conversation’ between the Republican and the president of the EU about the previous imposition of 50% rates on the products of the economic bloc
The president of the United States, and the head of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, announced on Sunday (25) a extension of the pause in US tariffs over the European Union until July 9, while commercial negotiations continue. As part of their trade war, the United States had contemplated the imposition of 50% customs tariffs on European Union products.
But now Trump indicated that he had “a very pleasant conversation” with the European Commission President, Ursula Von Der Leyen, and that he would comply with his original June 1 request in statements to reporters before embarking on the presidential Air Force One.
Shortly before Trump’s statements, the commission chairman also commented on the extension of the break. “Europe is willing to advance in negotiations quickly and decisively. To reach a good deal, we will need time until July 9,” said von der Leyen on social network X. “The European Union and the United States have the most important and close business relations in the world,” he added.
On Friday, Donald Trump stated that he did not “seek a commercial agreement” with the European Union and threatened to impose 50% overcrowding on imports from the bloc from June 1. The European Commission, which negotiates trade agreements the name of the bloc, reacted immediately and requested respect from the United States.
“The EU is fully committed and determined to obtain an agreement that works for both parties,” said Maros Commerce Commissioner Sefcovic in the X, after discussions with American Representative of Commerce Jamieson Greer and Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick. Trade between European Union and the United States should be guided by mutual respect, not by threats. We are willing to defend our interests, ”he added.
