After Musk – 06/06/2025 – Demétrio Magnoli

Musk detonated. He qualified “Big Beautiful Bill”, Trump’s budget project, as a “disgusting abomination”: “shame of those who voted for him.” It is the first relevant split in the Trump administration-and the evidence that, instead of condemnatory sentences about “fascism,” one must understand complexity.

In the first term, an insecure Trump surrounded himself with figures of Estabishment and supported himself in the professional bureaucracy. The result was the curtailment of its most destructive impulses. In the current term, the president freed himself from the shackles. He summoned extremist heralds, sycophants and flatterers, declared war on state bureaucracy and challenged the authority of the judges. Even so, your government is not a monolith, but an ideological rainbow.

The coalition encompasses three factions from the right: national-poplists, techno-libertarian and traditional republicans. The third strand was inserted into the government in order to complete the demolition of the former “Reagan Party” through its demoralization. Mike Waltz, the brief national security counselor who tried to keep the erect spine, was exiled to the UN ambassador ceremonial post. Already Marco Rubio, the intimidated Secretary of State, sacrifice daily his convictions on the altar of Trump’s adulation.

Rubio bowed to the betrayal of Ukraine, engaged in the annihilation of USAID and assumed instrumental role in annulment of activists visas that, in the shadow of the first amendment, manifest themselves against Israel. On his knees against the president, he personifies the brain death of conservative internationalism in the US.

Musk’s resignation alters the balance of forces between the government’s two main factions, marking the triumph of national poplists.

Techno-Libertarian are globalist and ultra-liberal. In the past, they hanged to the side of the Democrats, subordinating the goal of a “minimum state” to that of an open world economy. They settled in the 2024 campaign, attracted by the promises of radical deregulation and a total war against professional bureaucracy. In addition to Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, Doge’s leaders’ resignings, Trump received millionaire support from Peter Thiel, PayPal, Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta, and even former Binding Jeff Bezos of Amazon.

The techno-libertarian have been subjected to the outbreak of the fiscal war, but did not swallow the “Big Beautiful Bill”, which accelerates US national indebtedness. The split of Musk, an ultraliberal whose largest companies orbit around contracts with the state, widens the insatiable contradictions of Trump’s coalition mounted.

The national poplists, represented by Vice Jd Vance, ideologist Steve Bannon and Pete Navarro, architect of the Tariff War, form the axis of the government and provide the flags of the Maga Movement. In the geopolitical sphere, they are isolationist, restoring the strategic compass that predominated in the delivery. In the field of values, redeem the reactionary concepts of Pat Buchanan, former leader of the Republican Christian wing. Above all, however, they are economic populists willing to lead the adventures of tariff protectionism and unlooked tax expansionism.

Trump, the final referee, lacks principles or ideology. But it is with the national poplists who chose to govern.
